The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is available with a choice of two engine variants: the S 580 4MATIC is powered by an eight-cylinder petrol engine (M176) and the S 680, featuring the almighty V12, for the first time combined with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Mercedes somehow managed to meet emission standards with a V12 engine – one last time.
The V12 biturbo unit was comprehensively modified for use in the S 680 4MATIC. The exhaust gas turbochargers, exhaust manifold and air ducting were all adapted. Also new is a closed-loop petrol-engine particulate filter. It has an output of 612 hp and a maximum torque of 900 Nm. The most important features of the engine include an all-aluminium crankcase, a one-piece chain drive, a forged crankshaft made of high-quality quenched and tempered steel, forged pistons and a multi-spark ignition system with twelve double ignition coils.
4Matic AWD for the S 680 – That’s a first!
For the first time, the V12 has been combined with 4MATIC. Features of the all-wheel drive system include a low overall system weight, optimum traction and handling safety, and exceptional ride comfort and driving dynamics. On the S 680 4MATIC, the torque-split is 31 percent to the front axle and 69 percent to the rear axle. Compared with the 4MATIC models in the previous model series, the front axle differential here has been further developed and optimised in terms of weight and friction.
